Can’t Sleep with the Longer Days? Natural Sleep Support for Summer by Dr. Erin Coffey, ND

By Dr. Erin Coffey, ND

As the days become longer and the sun lingers well into the evening, many people find their sleep patterns shift and they may struggle with getting quality sleep.

Here are some naturopathic tips that may help:

1. Support Your Circadian Rhythm

  • Dim the lights in the evening to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down

  • Avoid screens, ideally a couple of hours before bed, and if that is not an option consider blue light glasses

  • Use blackout curtains in your bedroom

  • Get out in the natural light first thing in the morning to reset your circadian clock.

2. Cool Your Sleeping Environment

  • Keep your room around 20 C (68 F)

  • Use lightweight, breathable bedding

3. Nourish Your Nervous System

  • Eat a balanced and nutritious diet to help calm the body and mind

  • Drink a gentle night time tea

  • Limit sweets, caffeine, alcohol and heavy foods in the evening

  • Try meditation or sleep stories to quiet your mind

Everyone’s sleep story is different.  If you are struggling, book an appointment with our naturopathic doctor who can create an individualized plan for you.

Seasonal shifts are the perfect time to check in with your naturopath. It’s easy to let self-care slide when the sun is shining and you’re feeling good—but staying proactive keeps you balanced all year long. Don’t forget to book your next visit!
