Summer Reading with Oma!

It's August—can you believe?!—and if you're looking for some books to delve into during the dog days of summer we've got you covered! Whether you're passing the time in the backyard, at the beach or cottage, or hanging out on a patio or on your living room couch, we have recommendations to suit many tastes and to help you relax, escape, and think. Have you read any of our staff's reading recommendations below?

"My favourite book at the moment is called The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly, about three generations of women tending the same garden."

"I'm currently enjoying The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It's about two sisters and their very different experiences in Nazi occupied France during WWII. I also read another book of hers called The Great Alone which was super good! That one's about a family in the '70s that moves to Alaska."

"I loved The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert."

"I'm reading George St Pierre's The Way of the Fight, a biography that's an easy read and engaging. It's about growing up in Montreal and his road to competition."

"I'm reading Five Little Indians by Michelle Good. This book is about five fictional characters and their experience in the residential school systems, and the continuing trials after being released and expected to integrate back into society without any supports. This book very effectively demonstrates the ongoing repercussions of colonialism and intergenerational trauma faced by our Indigenous communities. A heavy but important read."

"Beach reads for me are often thrillers. On the go right now are Belong to Me by Marisa de Los Santos and Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radis.”

"For anyone who likes a slightly darker tale, there's The Push by Ashley Audrain. It's an incredible book, I couldn't put it down. It's a lot like Lionel Shriver's We Need to Talk About Kevin."

"I'm reading Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach, which has put me back in touch with being more compassionate with myself. It's not too heavy compared to some similar titles, and her podcast is great too."

"I've always enjoyed Greek mythology, so really liked both The Song of Achilles and Circe by Madeline Miller. I loved how she filled in the blanks from the original myths and fleshed out the characters so they were more human."

AND...while you're enjoying these books, we've got a Spotify playlist curated by our staff that you can listen to HERE or preview below:

Here's to wishing you an amazing rest of the summer!
