When Small Actions Make a Big Difference by Janine Cole, Registered Psychotherapist

I’ve been hearing a common concern from many people lately: that the world feels like it’s on fire.

The news cycle is relentless, creating a steady background of anxiety, anger or helplessness. We care deeply about what is happening, but the scale of these problems can intensify the struggles many of us are already carrying.

When things feel overwhelming, our nervous systems often respond by shutting down, numbing, or getting pulled into endless scrolling, all of which can make things feel worse.

One helpful response is to shift our attention back to the parts of our lives where our actions matter. This doesn’t mean ignoring larger issues, it means grounding ourselves in meaningful actions that are within reach.

Instead of asking How do I fix everything? we might ask What is one small thing I can do today? Small acts matter more than we realize. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Sandwich club:

A community initiative that prepares and distributes sandwiches to people experiencing food insecurity in East Toronto (one Wednesday a month, each participant makes 10 sandwiches). This is a link to a group in the east end:

Little Free Library

Adding a book(s) to a little free library. Find one in your area here.

Community Pantry / Fridge

Contributing a few items to a community pantry or fridge. You can find information on community pantries here and community fridges here.

Check in on a Neighbour

These gestures may seem small, but they can have a meaningful impact on our own emotional well-being and (bonus!) the wider community. They move us from a state of helplessness into participation and reconnect us with our capacity to care and contribute.

Acts of generosity remind us that even in difficult times, community and kindness are still very present and needed. When the world feels too big and chaotic, it can help to narrow the lens.

These small acts of care may not solve the world’s problems, but they help us stay connected, grounded, and send out ripples of positive impact.
