Therapeutic Breast Massage: Supporting Breast and Upper Body Health by Anne Gingras, RMT

By Anne Gingras, RMT

Breast health is an important part of whole-body wellness, yet it’s something many women rarely talk about outside of medical appointments. Therapeutic breast massage is a specialized technique that can support breast and upper body health in a safe, respectful, and clinically appropriate setting.

When performed by a trained practitioner, this type of treatment focuses on the surrounding tissues of the chest, lymphatic system, and upper body. It can help reduce discomfort, improve circulation, and support the body through different stages of health and healing.

Why Therapeutic Breast Massage May Be Helpful

There are several reasons someone may benefit from therapeutic breast massage.

Menstrual Cycle–Related Breast Tenderness

Hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle can cause breast swelling, heaviness, and discomfort. Gentle manual techniques can help encourage circulation and lymphatic movement, which may reduce congestion and tenderness.

Lymphatic and Circulatory Support

The breasts and chest contain a significant network of lymphatic vessels. Targeted massage techniques may help support natural lymphatic flow, assisting the body in reducing fluid buildup and improving overall tissue health.

Upper Back, Neck, and Chest Tension

Many people carry significant tension through the chest and upper body, particularly those who spend long hours sitting, working at a computer, or caring for young children. Addressing the tissues of the chest and surrounding musculature can help relieve strain that contributes to neck, shoulder, and upper back discomfort.

Breast-Related Surgery (Pre-Op)

Therapeutic breast massage can also be used pre-operatively to help prepare the tissues before breast procedures such as:

● Breast reduction

● Breast augmentation

● Breast lift

● Breast cancer-related surgery (including mastectomy, lumpectomy, or reconstruction)

Pre-surgical care can help improve tissue mobility and circulation, supporting the body as it prepares for surgery and recovery.

Breast Related Surgery (Post-Op)

Post-operative care is another area where therapeutic breast massage can play a supportive role when cleared by a healthcare provider. Massage therapy may help with:

● Scar tissue management and mobility

● Reducing tightness or adhesions after surgery

● Supporting circulation and lymphatic drainage during recovery

● Addressing discomfort or tension in the surrounding chest and shoulder tissues

Support After Surgery

Post-operative care is another area where therapeutic breast massage can play a supportive role when cleared by a healthcare provider. Massage therapy may help with:

● Supporting circulation and lymphatic drainage during recovery

● Addressing discomfort or tension in the surrounding chest and shoulder tissues

For individuals who have had breast cancer surgery, reconstruction, or other chest procedures, specialized massage can also be incorporated as part of a broader supportive care plan. Treatments are always adapted carefully based on surgical history, healing stage, and medical guidance.
