Boosting Immunity for the Change of Season by Dr. Erin Coffey, ND

September is just around the corner and it’s a month that always feels like a fresh start - new routines and the return of shared indoor spaces. With that change comes a potential spike in exposure to viruses and bacteria, making it the perfect time to give your immune system a little extra support.

Whether you are preparing yourself, your child, or your whole household for a healthy transition into Fall, here are some considerations.

1. Prioritize Good Sleep

Sleep is an important component in overall wellness and immunity. Aim for consistent bedtimes, adequate hours and bedtime routines that help calm and support quality sleep.

2. Manage Stress

Transitions can be stressful - at any age. A calm nervous system supports a more resilient immune system. Pausing, breathing, meditating, talking through emotions, journalling, creative activities, getting into nature and exercising are all ways we can calm our nervous system. Supplementation is also an option in some cases.

3. Fuel with a Balanced Diet

Swap out processed or fast food for good quality whole food choices. Protein supports emotional regulation. A variety of fruits and veggies contain critical nutrients that support overall well-being and increased immunity. Healthy fats, fibre, prebiotic and probiotic foods can all be supportive. Food is medicine.

4. Supplements

While food is the foundation, supplementation can provide extra support. Many are deficient in Vitamin D which plays a significant role in the strength of our immune system. Gut health and immunity are also intricately connected and probiotics can be supportive. Supplements are generally best individualized to age, specific circumstances and health history.
